This Portland appearance was also the very last performance of original Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, the last surviving member of the original Jimi Hendrix Experience band. The concert was on November 7th and Mitchell died in his Portland hotel room of natural causes on November 12th at age 61.
He was the second drummer associated with Hendrix to die in 2008. Band of Gypsies drummer Buddy Miles also died in February.
Experience Hendrix has been a series of All-Star Tribute concerts held in honor of rock's most celebrated guitarist. This Portland performance was one of only three initial West Coast dates, which culminated in a huge celebration and sellout at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. The original tour featured acoustic and electric performances by all the artists above. Other dates over the past four years have featured featured the likes of Carlos Santana, Joe Satriani, Ann Wilson and Kid Rock’s Kenny Olson among many others. Notable players on this go-’round included Howlin' Wolf guitarist and Hendrix influence Hubert Sumlin, The Doors’ Robbie Krieger and Dale Bramhall.
Gary Houston's work is some of the most beautiful and affordable music art on the market today. His impeccable design sense and subtle humor give his work a hand-made quality exemplified by such top-tier silkscreen illustrators as Emek and Chuck Sperry/Ron Donovan of the Firehouse. And like the Firehouse guys, Gary hand-pulls all his own silkscreens. His stellar skills and attention to detail are evident in every poster he makes -- truly the perfect choice for any wall in a music lover's home. Beyond the obvious beauty and intrinsic value of his work, its high-quality, reasonable cost and very low edition size make Gary's work a great acquisition for collectors.
