    Description

In today's world, plastic bags are a scourge upon the earth.  However, this could possibly be the oldest existing, mall originated, department store plastic shopping bag in the United States (or World).  This department store (Marvin Oreck Womenswear) was an original tenant in Southdale Mall of Edina Minnesota which opened in 1956.  I have included a floor plan map of the 2nd floor of the mall in 1956 for reference. I believe Marvin Oreck remained open until the early 70s. Southdale Mall was the first indoor, climate controlled mall in the United States and is still open today!  One of the patents listed on the bottom of the bag is for the snap locking carry handle which was applied for in 1965 and approved in 1967.  The other listed patent is for automatic locking seat-belts in automobiles... go figure.  My mother used the bag to hold her hair curlers but it is in remarkable shape considering it's age.  It has a few minor blemishes and a couple very small holes.  I challenge anyone to find an older, Mall originated shopping bag.  You can still find Marvin Oreck clothing popping up on eBay but a bag from the store... good luck.  Thanks for looking.
